Jacks or Better is an online video poker game developed by Microgaming. And if you’re a fan of “Draw Poker”, i.e., the most basic variant of video poker, then you should definitely not miss it.

Simple gameplay and even simpler rules

Jacks or Better Poker is played with 52 cards which are shuffled after each game. You start by placing a bet. Then, just like in classical poker, you receive 5 cards (after pressing DEAL) and it’s only up to you to decide what to do with those. For each card, you can decide to either keep (HELD) it, or discard it. The aim is to find a combination that is at least as the minimum winning combination for the game – notably, two Jacks.

If you create a combination of, for instance, two tens or two nines, you won’t win anything at all. So if you start with two tens in your hands, you can certainly keep them in your hand, but in that case you'd be hoping that in the next round you’d get an additional ten to create a winning triple.

If you win, you’re given two options. You can either immediately take your prize by using the COLLECT button, or decide to gamble by clicking on DOUBLE – in which case you’ll be taken to a special minigame. There, your task is to choose a card (from four face-down cards) that has a higher value than the shown card. If you succeed, your win will be doubled. And after that you can once again decide whether to try and double up or to take what you have.

Jacks or Better does not offer any special features except for the aforementioned classical gamble option, but we did not find that to be a drawback at all. Simplicity is beauty, and in the case of this game the saying clearly holds true. We found that the gamble function made the gameplay just spicy enough, and we enjoyed our time spent with the game.
